Anderson County to be site of 2009 S.C. Sons of Confederate Veterans Convention

— The South Carolina Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will conduct its 2009 state convention in Anderson County, county officials reported Tuesday.

The Anderson Sports and Entertainment Center will be the headquarters for the March 2009 event. The convention is expected to bring $100,000 in direct economic impact and should be the largest the county has ever hosted, according to a county news release.

“We are looking forward to bringing our convention to Anderson County in March 2009,” said Randy Burbage, South Carolina Sons of Confederate Veterans Division Commander. “We anticipate a great convention in this wonderful venue.”

The event is the third large convention Anderson County has landed in recent months. Anderson County also will be the host of the Carolina Farm Stewardship Convention in October 2008 and the Sons of Confederate Veterans’ 2010 National Reunion.

Anderson County Administrator Joey Preston said landing the Sons of Confederate Veterans’ national reunion should bring millions into Anderson County over the next two years. In the process of applying to be the site of that convention, county officials developed a template to use for soliciting other major conferences and conventions, officials said.

“Anderson County has much to offer as a convention destination,” Mr. Preston said, according to the release. “This is a great beginning.”

The South Carolina Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans includes 68 chapters, or camps. Among the organization’s activities are sponsoring living history demonstrations in schools, reenactments, marking Confederate graves, preserving historic sites and supporting an annual, statewide Confederate Memorial Day observance, according to the news release.
